Plantae in the Campo de Calatrava eggplant improvement project

A technological project to improve the cultivation of eggplant in Campo de Calatrava, in collaboration with FiveCLM, ECOBIOBE and UtilTech, in where our company, Plantae, provides the measurement with sensors for the parameters needed to apply precision agriculture to your crop and improve its properties.

Utiltech, ECOBIOBE and Plantae

This joint project between the three companies aims to apply precision agriculture to improve the medicinal properties of eggplant crops in Campo de Calatrava:

  • ECOBIOBE analyses the potential of this vegetable, both in its leaves and in the stem, due to the properties of chlorogenic acid, with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effects, and potential effect on the regulation of glucose and fat metabolism, favouring the prevention of cardiovascular and rheumatic diseases, etc. The aim is to make Campo de Calatrava the leading producer of chlorogenic acid in the world.

Irrigation management with Plantae probes

Using probes to grow eggplant helps control irrigation and adjust the amounts of water and nutrients the plant needs.

Measuring conductivity is of utmost importance; controlling it prevents plant stress and also assesses the increase in salinity concentration, which should be moderate, to increase the amount of phenols.

Excessive salinity can alter plant growth and yield. However, a slight increase in salinity increases the total concentration of phenolic compounds, including chlorogenic acid, as part of the defense mechanism. With this increase in chlorogenic acid, the artichoke becomes more beneficial to health.

The fundamental objective of the project, in addition to improving the quality and quantity of the product, is to achieve an increase in chlorogenic acid in the eggplant, a natural phenolic compound that belongs to the group of hydroxycinnamic acids, which will be obtained through an extraction process and is present in large quantities in the stem and leaves of the eggplant.

Characteristics of artichokes from Campo de Calatrava

Alcachofas del Campo de Calatrava

The Campo de Calatrava artichoke is a native variety of the province of Ciudad Real, recognized for its exceptional quality and flavor. Although it doesn't have a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), it stands out for its organoleptic characteristics and its adaptation to the region's climate and soil.

  • They are medium-sized, making them easy to handle and consume.
  • Its buds are compact, light green, with thin, thornless leaves.
  • It has a soft and sweet flavor, with a tender and juicy texture.
