It aims to create one of the world's largest free trade areas, encompassing over 700 million people and featuring very intense bilateral trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Main instruments of the EU-Mercosur agreement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">It is a <strong>association and free trade agreement<\/strong>: <strong>lower import taxes, more trade and more cooperation<\/strong> between Europe and South America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>EU-Mercosur Association Agreement (EMPA)<\/strong><br>\u2013 Broad framework that includes political, environmental, human rights and trade cooperation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Interim Trade Agreement (iTA)<\/strong><br>\u2013 A provisional instrument with trade and investment commitments that can be applied before the EMPA comes into force.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">It is designed to <strong>boost exports<\/strong> and industrial cooperation between Europe and South America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EU is projected to see increases in exports and job creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Mercosur, it represents more favorable access to a high-purchasing-power market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The EU seeks to diversify its trading partners beyond China and the US, strengthen transatlantic links and secure critical raw materials (such as nickel or lithium).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">What does the EU-Mercosur agreement include?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Trade in products<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">It will progressively eliminate <strong>more than 90% of tariffs<\/strong> between the two regions over a period of years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the EU, it means opening markets for industrial products (cars, machinery, chemicals) and agricultural products (wine, olive oil, chocolates).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For Mercosur, it allows exporting products (soybeans, sugar, meat) with higher quotas or lower barriers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> 2. Agriculture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">There are limited quotas for sensitive products: 1.5% of total EU beef production is subject to a 7.5% tariff. Quotas for chicken, honey, rice, and ethanol are progressive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Safeguard clauses<\/strong> are included to react if there is actual damage to European sectors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. <strong>Standards<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">The agreement <strong>maintains European requirements for health, food safety and the environment<\/strong>, it does not lower them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">It also protects <strong>geographical indications<\/strong> (European products with designation of origin).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. <strong>Sustainable development and climate<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Commitments are established to implement the <strong>Paris Agreement<\/strong>, combat deforestation and promote sustainable practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. <strong>Services, investments and intellectual property<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It facilitates trade in services, investments, intellectual property, and access for companies to public tenders on both sides.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The formal signing of the Association Agreement and the Interim Trade Agreement between the EU and Mercosur took place on January 17, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>The European Parliament has asked the Court of Justice of the EU for a legal review of the agreement<\/strong>, which may <strong>delay the process until 2027 or later<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tariff elimination and trade liberalization do not happen immediately:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>La <strong>UE eliminar\u00e1 gradualmente aranceles sobre productos del Mercosur (aproximadamente 92%)<\/strong> en un plazo <strong>de hasta 10 a\u00f1os<\/strong> desde la entrada en vigor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Mercosur will gradually eliminate tariffs on EU products (approx. 91%) over a period of up to 10-15 years depending on sensitive product categories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\"><strong>Protests<\/strong> that have taken place in Europe against the <strong>trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Mostly <strong>European farmers and ranchers<\/strong>, together with agricultural unions from countries such as <strong>Spain, France, Ireland, Greece, Belgium and other EU states<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Fair competition and equal standards<\/strong>: They require that products imported from Mercosur comply with <strong>the same health, environmental and labor standards<\/strong> as European products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Protection of local agriculture<\/strong>: they warn that the entry of cheaper products could <strong>damage the profitability of family farms<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Defense of food sovereignty<\/strong>: They believe that the EU should not prioritize trade if it jeopardizes local food production.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Specific protections<\/strong>: They are asking for compensatory tariffs, safeguard measures and reinforcement of border controls.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sources<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2026\/01\/09\/eu-mercosur-council-greenlights-signature-of-the-comprehensive-partnership-and-trade-agreement\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">consilium.europa.eu<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ant.plantae.lavallweb.com\/en\/\">Plantae<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The EU-Mercosur agreement is an association and free trade treaty between the European Union with its 27 countries and the South American bloc Mercosur<\/p>","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":91355,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[10],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-91354","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-informativas"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
