However, climate pressure is increasing: more frequent heat waves and droughts are affecting regions like Sicily, Puglia, Tuscany, and Veneto unevenly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Recent studies indicate that the south and the islands are especially vulnerable, while even in the north (Veneto, Piedmont) episodes of water stress appear in dry years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Although irrigation has historically been limited in many DOC\/DOP regions, climate change is driving its adoption. This limits photosynthesis during dry periods if there is insufficient water. <\/td><td>It has a high irrigation requirement if grown in soils with low water retention capacity or in exposures and training conditions that demand more water. In experiments, replenishing approximately 70% of crop evapotranspiration (ETo) significantly improves yield compared to no irrigation.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Vermentino<\/strong><\/td><td>White<\/td><td>More anisohydric than Cannonau in some locations. This means it tolerates low soil moisture stability better than other species, but at the cost of greater stress if the drought is intense or prolonged.<\/td><td>In areas of high evaporation, it needs more frequent irrigation; in less extreme conditions, irrigation can be reduced, but always monitoring humidity, since its water productivity varies greatly depending on soil and climate.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Cannonau<\/strong> (also known as Grenache in other places)<\/td><td>Red<\/td><td>It tends to have lower transpiration and lower water demand per plant compared to Vermentino under the same conditions; better water use efficiency in many studies; moderate deficit tolerance.<\/td><td>Moderate irrigation; in soils with good water capacity, severe irrigation can be dispensed with if rainfall is decent; but it is affected in severe droughts.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Sangiovese<\/strong><\/td><td>Red<\/td><td>Sensitive to early deficit (before veraison) and during fruit development; it recovers well when re-irrigated, but deficit poses losses of phenolic quality or acidity if it is severe. <\/td><td>It needs supplemental irrigation during veraison or just before if the soil and climate require it; avoid severe deficit in the fruit growth phase if you want to maintain aromatic profile and balance.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Main technical dimensions for assessing the irrigation needs of a variety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To accurately assess how much irrigation a variety will need, these factors are critical:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Comportamiento isoh\u00eddrico y anisoh\u00eddrico<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Isoh\u00eddricos (o near-isoh\u00eddricos) reaccionan cerrando estomas cuando la planta detecta d\u00e9ficit h\u00eddrico, manteniendo hoja con potencial menos negativo, pero reducen fotos\u00edntesis. Ej.: Aglianico.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Phenological stages: flowering, fruit set, veraison, ripening. Deficiency is almost always more damaging if it occurs during veraison-ripening; varieties that tolerate early deficiency better do not necessarily tolerate it during ripening.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Soil \/ Water retention capacity<\/strong>: Heavy soils (clay) retain more water; light soils (sandy, stony) less. Varieties that transpire a lot may need more frequent watering if the soil drains quickly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Local climate (evapotranspiration, temperatures, atmospheric humidity)<\/strong>: in warm and dry areas the water demand increases; varieties with a greater passion for sun (exposed red grapes) can suffer greatly without irrigation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Training\/management system<\/strong>: Sun exposure, greater in trellis, foliage density influences water demand.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I vigneti italiani rendono l&#8217;Italia uno dei paesi produttori di vino pi\u00f9 diversificati al mondo. Negli esperimenti, il reintegro di circa il 70% dell&#8217;evapotraspirazione colturale (ETo) migliora significativamente la resa rispetto all&#8217;assenza di irrigazione.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Vermentino<\/strong><\/td><td>White<\/td><td>Pi\u00f9 anisoidrico del Cannonau in alcune zone.Ci\u00f2 significa che tollera meglio di altre variet\u00e0 una bassa stabilit\u00e0 dell&#8217;umidit\u00e0 del suolo, ma a costo di un maggiore stress in caso di siccit\u00e0 intensa o prolungata.<\/td><td>Nelle zone ad alta evaporazione, necessita di irrigazioni pi\u00f9 frequenti; in condizioni meno estreme, l&#8217;irrigazione pu\u00f2 essere ridotta, ma l&#8217;umidit\u00e0 deve essere sempre monitorata, poich\u00e9 la sua produttivit\u00e0 idrica varia notevolmente a seconda del suolo e del clima.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Cannonau (noto anche come Grenache in altre regioni):<\/td><td>Rosso<\/td><td>Tende ad avere una traspirazione inferiore e un fabbisogno idrico per pianta inferiore rispetto al Vermentino nelle stesse condizioni; migliore efficienza nell&#8217;uso dell&#8217;acqua in molti studi; moderata tolleranza al deficit idrico.<\/td><td>Richiede un&#8217;irrigazione moderata; in terreni con buona capacit\u00e0 di ritenzione idrica, pu\u00f2 fare a meno di irrigazioni intense se le precipitazioni sono adeguate. Tuttavia, risente di gravi siccit\u00e0.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Sangiovese<\/strong><\/td><td>Rosso<\/td><td>\u00c8 sensibile ai deficit idrici precoci (prima della maturazione) e durante lo sviluppo del frutto; Si riprende bene con la reirrigazione, ma gravi carenze idriche possono portare a perdite di qualit\u00e0 fenolica o acidit\u00e0.<\/td><td>Richiede irrigazione supplementare durante la maturazione o poco prima, se le condizioni del terreno e del clima lo richiedono; evitare gravi carenze idriche durante la fase di crescita del frutto per mantenere il profilo aromatico e l&#8217;equilibrio.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Principali fattori tecnici per la valutazione del fabbisogno idrico di una variet\u00e0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Per valutare con precisione la quantit\u00e0 di irrigazione necessaria a una variet\u00e0, \u00e8 fondamentale considerare i seguenti fattori:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Comportamento isoidrico e anisoidrico: le variet\u00e0 isoidriche (o quasi isoidriche) reagiscono chiudendo gli stomi quando la pianta rileva una carenza idrica, mantenendo un potenziale fogliare meno negativo, ma riducendo la fotosintesi. Esempi: Montepulciano, Cabernet Sauvignon. Le variet\u00e0 anisoidriche tollerano potenziali pi\u00f9 negativi prima di una forte risposta stomatica, ma possono subire danni se la carenza peggiora. Esempio: Aglianico.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fasi fenologiche: fioritura, allegagione, invaiatura, maturazione. Le carenze idriche sono quasi sempre pi\u00f9 dannose se si verificano durante l&#8217;invaiatura e la maturazione; le variet\u00e0 che tollerano meglio le carenze idriche precoci non necessariamente le tollerano durante la maturazione.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Capacit\u00e0 di ritenzione idrica del suolo: i terreni pesanti (argillosi) trattengono pi\u00f9 acqua; i terreni leggeri (sabbiosi, sassosi) ne trattengono meno.
