The goal is to raise awareness about the importance of protecting and conserving soil, a natural resource essential to life on the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The date was established in honor of <strong>Dr. Hugh Hammond Bennett<\/strong>, a pioneer in the study of soil conservation, who died on July 7. His work in the U.S. helped develop sustainable soil management policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is soil conservation important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>Agricultural soils<\/strong> are those with a loose structure, adequate organic matter and good gas exchange, which favor root growth in plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Soil is essential for:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>The production of food<\/strong>, fibers and raw materials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Water storage<\/strong> and the regulation of the hydrological cycle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Biodiversity<\/strong>, as it is home to millions of organisms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Carbon capture<\/strong>, helping to mitigate climate change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The soil is threatened by:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Erosion<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pollution<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Deforestation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Excessive use of a key factor in microbial activity and root growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Multiple sensors can be installed at different depths, and they transmit data wirelessly to an app or web platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> <strong>Why are agricultural soils important for conservation?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.  <strong>More efficient irrigation (avoids excess and shortage)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">They help to <strong>water them only when really needed<\/strong>, avoiding waterlogging or water stress.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">This <strong>reduces water consumption<\/strong> and <strong>prevents leaching<\/strong> (loss of nutrients to deeper layers).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>They prevent salinization<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Poorly managed excessive watering can drag salts into the root zone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The probes allow maintaining a water balance that does not promote salt accumulation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. <strong>They promote root development<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Roots grow best when the soil has
