The vulnerability of crops to extreme temperatures is the main objective to combat, as well as the way to avoid damage with new technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Outside temperature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Temperature is the measure we use to measure the amount of heat radiated by an object or the environment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The influence of temperature on plants is fundamental, both in their development and especially when they are extreme or have sudden changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Temperature can affect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong> Perspiration, governed in equal parts by lighting and temperature <\/strong>, is greater as temperatures increase, being zero in the dark. It is controlled by the stomata.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong> Photosynthesis <\/strong>, is the process produced with lighting and in which the plant transforms light energy into chemical energy, it is carried out weakly at low temperatures and rises to a maximum temperature threshold for each species.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong> Respiration <\/strong>, is the process produced with low lighting and in which the plant through the oxidation of sugars, fats, organic acids, etc. obtains energy and releases CO2 and water vapor. Respiratory activity is weak at low temperatures and rises to a maximum temperature threshold for each species.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">In the <strong> enzymatic activities <\/strong> they are paralyzed when the optimum temperature of each plant is exceeded.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">The <strong> permeability of the cell membrane <\/strong> altering its fluidity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">The <strong> absorption of water and nutrients <\/strong> is altered by extreme temperatures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong> Germination <\/strong>. Each plant species has a temperature below which its seeds cannot germinate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We must develop strategies to deal with extreme temperatures, above 35\u00ba and below 0\u00ba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Low temperatures do not affect all plants equally, it depends on the threshold that each one has. With the highs they also influence differently in each variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">To assess the influence of outside temperature on plants we have to understand a very important concept: <strong> the thermal integral <\/strong>. It sounds very mathematical, but it really is a pretty straightforward concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the thermal integral?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>It is the amount of degrees Celsius that a crop must accumulate from when it is sown or planted until we obtain its production in the current vegetative cycle.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a lettuce has approximately a thermal integral of 700\u00baC from when it is planted until it is ready for consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Measuring this <strong> thermal integral <\/strong> helps the farmer a lot. the measurement is made from the <strong> lower threshold <\/strong> to the <strong> upper threshold <\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thermal thresholds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Las temperaturas influyen en el crecimiento de las plantas de tal forma que por debajo de una cierta temperatura, la planta est\u00e1 en &#8220;latencia&#8221;, es decir su crecimiento se detiene casi por completo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong> The lower threshold <\/strong> is the minimum temperature that causes its growth to begin. From that temperature, the hours of heat are counted to calculate the thermal integral. For example, in pistachios it is 7.2\u00baC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong> The upper threshold <\/strong> is the maximum temperature that stops the development of the plant almost completely.
