{"id":73268,"date":"2024-01-08T21:45:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-08T19:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ant.plantae.lavallweb.com\/?p=73268"},"modified":"2024-01-30T02:05:30","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T00:05:30","slug":"la-huella-del-carbono-y-la-agricultura-de-precision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ant.plantae.lavallweb.com\/en\/la-huella-del-carbono-y-la-agricultura-de-precision\/","title":{"rendered":"Carbon Footprint and Precision Farming - The Best with Sensors"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The <strong> carbon footprint <\/strong> is a tool that measures the amount of gases <strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carbon_print\" target=\"_self\"> GHG , greenhouse gases <\/a>) <\/strong> emitted into the atmosphere derived from the activities of production or consumption of goods and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong> Measure the <\/strong> <b> Carbon Footprint <\/b> <strong> (MHC) <\/strong>, is to collect data that comes from the direct and indirect consumption of products and energy of an organization and convert them into CO2 emissions to have an inventory of emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article we are going to discuss the pros and cons of agriculture in the carbon footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gases that give rise to the carbon footprint<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The atmosphere is a fluid made up of different types of gases. Some of these gases absorb solar radiation and make a dome-like effect like the roof of a greenhouse that retains heat and allows a suitable temperature to host life on earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is whether the emission is higher than what is considered a natural emission. Emissions of synthetic origin that cause excessive heating. That leads to climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Kyoto Protocol is the protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and an international agreement that aims to reduce the emissions of eight greenhouse gases that cause global warming.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to this protocol, greenhouse gases are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ant.plantae.lavallweb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/efecto-invernadero-2-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"Gases efecto invernadero\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Greenhouse effect gases<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Agriculture and the emission of gases<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agriculture is estimated to have a 25-30% impact on greenhouse gas emissions. But sustainable and precision agriculture reduces this percentage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Main sources of emissions of agents related to agriculture that affect the carbon footprint:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should also be noted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong> Tillage of the soil influences the dynamics of organic matter: <\/strong> changes the humidity and temperature conditions of the soil, incorporates the residues and periodically breaks the soil structure. In such a way that the loss of organic matter due to mineralization is usually accelerated, which usually corresponds to a greater emission of CO2 from the soil to the atmosphere (\u00c1lvaro-Fuentes et al., 2008).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong> Irrigation of crops influences the dynamics of CO2 flux from soils <\/strong>, in such a way that a decrease in the amounts of water supplied to them is expected to decrease CO2 flux rates from the ground, which mitigates global warming.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Carbon dioxide increase<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"929\" height=\"613\" src=\"https:\/\/ant.plantae.lavallweb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/ciclo-del-carbono-1.png\" alt=\"Ciclo del carbono\" class=\"wp-image-79018\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Natural carbon cycle. Preventing desertification and reducing emissions is urgent and fundamental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ant.plantae.lavallweb.com\/en\/precision-agriculture-with-sensors-and-other-technologies\/\" target=\"_self\"> Precision agriculture <\/a> reduces carbon footprint<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we can see in the table above there are many factors of the agricultural process that influence the carbon footprint. But other factors can mitigate this increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong> Precision agriculture <\/strong> can help reduce the carbon footprint by improving soil organic matter (<strong> SOM <\/strong>) and retaining soil organic carbon (<strong> COS <\/strong>). Precision farming optimizes land management based on your needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong> Increase agricultural areas <\/strong> with sustainable agriculture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong> Reduce the use of <\/strong> <strong> chemical fertilizers to a minimum <\/strong>, sulfates, nitrates and following the advice of specialists. Use exclusively when necessary and in just the right amount. Change them for organic fertilizers whenever possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong> Control the use of phytosanitary products <\/strong>, try to avoid the disease with humidity and temperature controls so as not to have to treat possible pests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Make <strong> mapping <\/strong> of the soil to assess its composition and texture and thus add the nutrients you need according to the type of crop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong> Images <\/strong> <strong> satellite <\/strong> that indicate various factors such as temperature, humidity and state of the crop. We can assess the area that needs a specific treatment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Studies with <strong> drones <\/strong> of the crop that indicate the needs of each crop and can prevent us from the appearance of pests that are eradicated at the beginning. Weed control.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Install <strong> humidity sensors <\/strong> Plantae that help optimize irrigation with water and energy savings.
