Zero waste discussions – Water dynamics

Zero waste discussions

Horpozim , the Horticultural Business Association, organized the third edition of the “Zero Waste Talks” initiative, with the participation of Hortiprofissional and representing Plantae. The dates for the sessions were: December 12 and 19, and January 2, 9, 16 and 23, in the city of Póvoa de Varzim.

The aim is to provide information on “alternatives to conventional agriculture, in a debate of ideas between farmers and companies that are at the forefront of discoveries and developments in the new needs of agriculture and its farmers.”

Other topics discussed included nutrition, hormones, soil microbiology, plant protection and water dynamics.

Water dynamics - Monitoring soil water with Plantae probes

The way water behaves in soil depends on several physical processes:

  • Infiltration: Entry of water into the soil from the surface. It depends on the texture, structure and compaction of the soil.
  • Water movement: It occurs through percolation (deep descent of water) and capillarity (upward movement).
  • Evaporation and transpiration: The loss of water from the soil and through plants.

Soil Water Monitoring with Probes

With moisture probes we have the precise and efficient way to monitor the water content in the soil and optimize irrigation. Plantae probes allow you to make precise decisions about when and how much to irrigate, improving water use and crop health. In this way we avoid waterlogging and water stress in the crop.

Efficient irrigation is achieved with:

  • Use of drip or sprinkler irrigation systems to optimize water consumption.
  • Monitoring soil moisture content with moisture and conductivity sensors to avoid unnecessary irrigation.

Other ways to conserve water:

  • Plant covers or mulch to reduce evaporation.
  • Conservation tillage to improve infiltration.
  • Crop rotation and cover crops to improve soil structure.

Soil drainage

  • Ditches and drainage pipes to remove excess water.
  • Adequate channels and slopes to avoid flooding.
