Plantae and Artificial Intelligence in Irrigation Management

Entrevista a Samuel López, CEO de Plantae, sobre “Plantae y la Inteligencia Artificial en la Gestión del Riego”.

About Plantae

Plantae is a Spanish startup specializing in precision agriculture. It has developed a wireless sensor system powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor irrigation in real time in crops such as highly intensive olive groves. We do not rule out expanding this approach to other crops such as intensive almonds, pistachios, vineyards, and more.

Origin and innovation of plants with Artificial Intelligence in Irrigation Management

  • It was born with the objective of creating easy-to-install soil sensors.
  • Validated in 2018, it has evolved to adapt to more than 80 crops.
  • It relies on collaborations with universities such as UC3M and UPM.

Water saving and sustainability

  • They have achieved savings of up to 40% in water consumption.
  • They adapt irrigation according to soil type, climate and crop phase.
  • Accessible technology for small producers (from €1,000).

Artificial Intelligence in Irrigation Management

  • Its current model is focused on super-intensive olive groves, but it adapts using real-time data.
  • Predictive models help anticipate water needs and make more accurate decisions.

Challenges and expansion

  • Adapting technology to different soils, climates, and crops is a major challenge.
  • They plan to internationalize in 2026 towards Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa.

Technology

  • Humidity, temperature and conductivity probes.
  • Customizable sensors and customer-tailored software platforms.
  • Modular, scalable and low-cost approach.
