Planting Frame and Useful Frame

We detail the importance of knowing the Planting Framework and the Useful Framework for each crop, which are concepts related to the distribution and organization of plants in a plot or land, particularly in intensive and super-intensive agriculture.

Planting Frame

It is the way in which plants are distributed on the land, considering their geometric arrangement and the distances between them. It is crucial to ensure efficient use of space, optimize access for agricultural work and promote healthy plant development.

Common Types of Planting Frames

  • Square: The plants are arranged in a square with equal distance between them in all directions. It is recommended for plantations of large trees such as walnut, pistachio, stone fruit, etc. It simplifies mechanization tasks and the placement of irrigation.
  • Rectangular: The distances are unequal between rows and between plants. This is the usual distribution in intensive and super-intensive plantations of almond trees, olive trees, etc. It allows for greater plant density or more space for machinery in one direction.
  • Triangular (or Staggered): The plants are placed at the vertices of equilateral triangles. This promotes better use of the land and ventilation of the plants.
  • Hexagonal: The plants form a honeycomb pattern, an evolution of the staggered pattern. It is the planting frame that allows the greatest density per unit area.

Useful Framework

It refers to the effective space that each plant uses to grow. It takes into account both the initial planting frame and the area that a plant actually occupies when it reaches its maximum development.

Factors that influence the Useful Framework

  • Plant Growth: Consider the size and structure of the roots and crown.
  • Competition: Nearby plants compete for resources such as light, water, and nutrients.
  • Cultural practices: Pruning, thinning and management systems influence effective space.

Relationship between both concepts

  • The Planting Frame is the initial arrangement that determines the number of plants that can be established in a plot.
  • The Useful Framework evaluates the effective space used by each plant over time, taking into account growth and external factors.

Proper planning of the Planting Frame and the Useful Frame is essential to ensure productive efficiency, plant health and resource optimization.

For sustainable agriculture, good planning is essential to maximize production and minimize costs, especially irrigation water.

Irrigation according to the useful frame of the plant consists of planning and applying water efficiently, taking into account the effective space that each plant occupies when developing, that is, the Useful Frame.
